Flexport's Ryan Petersen On Tariff Refunds, AI Agents And How To Win Back Customers
Tech's 'hurricane reporter' for global trade tells The Upstarts Podcast how he hopes to retrieve $50B for U.S. citizens. Plus, his Upstart Moment and AI-driven turnaround at Flexport.
$50 billion. That’s how much money in tariff refunds that the tech industry’s favorite ‘hurricane reporter’ for all things global trade, Ryan Petersen, hopes to retrieve for U.S. citizens using AI agents recently built by his startup, Flexport.
"I want to put it on my tombstone someday," he says.
But first, he’s had to engineer a turnaround at Flexport, the $8 billion-valued logistics unicorn that I profiled for a Forbes cover story in 2022.
The following year, I broke the news Petersen was leaving his CEO role for a VC job at Founders Fund. Within six months, he was back, doing damage control. Customers were fleeing; morale had plunged.
On our newest episode of The Upstarts Podcast, Ryan and I go back through Flexport’s disruptive origin story and how it lost his way, culminating in his Upstart Moment: regaining customer trust, and internal momentum, by refocusing on outcomes and speeding up Flexport’s product process with AI agents.
“It used to be a one-year strategic plan. You would lay out, ‘Okay, we’re going to do this, we’re going to do that,” he says. “Now you’re like, ‘All right, let’s go see if you can make this work, two days later. And it works.”
